Top Ten Best Simpsons Treehouse of Horror Segments

Halloween is coming up, and to get in the spirit of the season, I've compiled this list. Consider it assigned viewing. These are the ten best segments from The Simpsons Treehouse of Horror Halloween specials.

10. "Married To The Blob" (Treehouse of horror XVII)

"The blob" is one of the all time great monster movies, and the Simpsons parody is definitely one of the best offerings of the show's last several years. Alien goop transforms Homer into a giant Springfield destroying blob creature that eats everything including Doctor Phil in a quick cameo.

9. "Send in the Clones" (treehouse of horror XIII)

It's like "duplicity" except entertaining. One Homer is funny. A herd of Homer clones reeking havoc is undeniably awesome and classic.

8. "Hex and the City" (Treehouse of horror XII)

This one is very underrated. Homer angers a fortune teller and falls victim to a gypsy curse. The story isn't as great some of the others, but the laughs are definitely there in this classic Halloween episode.

7. "E.T., Go Home" (Trehouse of Horror XVIII)

It's just not Halloween without seeing Kang and Kodos pop up in the Simpsons. In this one Kang, or Kodos, I'm not sure which, befriends Bart E.T style. The friendship is short lived as the alien plot to take over earth is unveiled.

6. "It's the Grand Pumpkin, Milhouse" (Treehouse of Horror XIX)

"It's the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown" is a Halloween staple and a classic. For the Simpsons to attempt to parody this most beloved Halloween TV tradition was a gutsy move. Fortunately, the writers did a superb job of giving this classic the Simpsons treatment.

5. "I Know What You Diddily-Iddily-Did" (Treehouse of Horror X)

Honestly "I Know What You Did Last Summer" is not that great a movie as far as Halloween Fright fest goes, but the plot was good enough to make it a hit in the genre. Now when you take the same plot but insert Ned Flanders with a twist, that is a classic.

4. "Terror at 5½ Feet" (Treehouse of Horror IV)

Another one that doesn't often get the respect it deserves. The best Simpsons Halloween specials are the ones that parody the classics. This one is a nod to the most famous "Twilight Zone" episode in which a man (William shatner on TV; John Lithgow in the movie) is terrorized by a creature on the wing of the plane he's a passenger in. "There's something on the wing!!!!!" The Simpsons takes the same plot line to the Springfield Elementary school bus. This one is great because they perfectly captured the dark creepy tone for a Halloween episode, while still keeping the laughs going.

3. It's a tie for third: "Homer³" (Treehous of Horror VI) and "Time and Punishment" (Treehous of Horroe V)

I couldn't decide between Homer's time traveling adventures or his trip into "the third dimension." "Time and Punishment" is one of my all time favorites to watch. Seeing Homer repeatedly change the course of history and come back to a new reality is great. "Homer³" however marked a huge landmark as The Simpsons used revolutionary (for the time) new CGI animation. Aside from the technical Geekery of the episode, "Homer³" is just really funny. I always laugh at the same parts like when Homer gets pulled into the other dimension and calls out "I'm somewhere where I don't know where I am!"

2. "The Shinning" (Treehouse of Horror V)

Possibly the most universal fan favorite, the Simpson twist on "The Shining" is classic in so many ways. Favorite Line: "Urge to kill...rising.....rising..." Oh, and "No TV and no beer make Homer something, something." oh, and...well, really the whole episode is so perfect and quotable.

1. "Nightmare on Evergreen Terrace" (Treehouse of Horror VI)

It stands to reason that the number one Simpsons Halloween story would be a parody of one of the greatest horror movies of all time...OF ALL TIME!!! Sorry, I got a little Kanye there for a minute, but still "Nightmare on Elm Street" is one of the greatest horror movies of the past several decades, and the Simpson treatment is excellent. Grounds keeper Willy terrorizes Springfield students in their dreams in a very dark humored episode. "No! Not into the Kindergarten!"
